The Garden Guest House at Casa Serena was built in 2015 and offers a great base for lovers of nature, wildlife, mountain scenery and walking (walking maps and our own walking guide are available). Since September 2019 the property has a new swimming pool located alongside the house, with stunning mountain views. The house has two double rooms (one bed can be converted to two singles, if necessary) each with their own en suite shower/loo. The kitchen-living room has a fully equipped kitchen and its two double full-height windows open out onto a shady terrace, for outdoor living. The house is very well insulated and has underfloor heating, if required. The views are stunning -- the forested mountains of the Madonia to the east and the town of Polizzi Generosa, sitting on its high rocky ridge to the south. In the summer months, guests can pick vegetables from our organic garden -- and the property offers close access to several hiking trails.
The friendly, historic town of Polizzi Generosa is about 4kms away and has a range of shops, including bakers, butchers, delicatessen, cake shops, petrol station and a supermarket. There are a number of restaurants and bars in and close to the town, including the picturesque Giardino Donna Lavia, about 2kms away. For lovers of history and art, there is a small archaeological museum and the Chiesa Madre (Mother Church) houses a stunningly beautiful 15th c. triptych, accredited to the Flemish renaissance artist, Rogier van der Weyden.
Casa Serena and its Garden Guest House are actually located in the outer zone of the Madonia Regional Park, which covers about 400 sq. kms between Polizzi and the northern coast. The Park's spectacular peaks, which rise to nearly 2000 metres (6500 feet), with their hundreds of kilometres of well-maintained walking trails, are undoubtedly the main attraction. The display of wild flowers in the spring and early summer are staggering -- and visitors often see deer, wild pigs, porcupines, eagles and many other birds and animals. Above 1400 metres, the mountains are covered by around 10,000 hectares of very unexpected beech forest (the most southerly beech forests in Europe), as well as many other species of tree, such as oak, walnut, chestnut, the manna maple and the very rare Nebrodi pine, which is only found in one location, close to Polizzi Generosa.
The nearest beaches are about 45-50 minutes' drive away on the north coast -- and the pretty coastal resort of Cefalu is less than an hour's distance. However, there are three local agritourismos within about 20 minutes' drive from the house, with their own swimming pools, which are only 5 Euros per person a day. Other sites worth a visit include the extraordinary mosaics of the recently discovered Roman Villa (Villa Romana) at Piazza Armerina in the centre of the island; the town of Caccamo to the north-west, with its well-preserved Norman castle and the Greek site of Himera, destroyed by the Carthaginians in 420BC, down by the coast, which has a fascinating museum.
